Ebay can be an intimidating business. Perhaps one of the most crucial parts of the transactions is shipping. Years of experience has taught me that Priority Mail from the United States Postal Service is the most effective way to ship items. It so happens Priority Mail is also one great value. Buyers have bought and paid for my item on Sunday, and received it on Wednesday or Thursday. That is some great time frames for getting things out the door.

I used to go to the USPS every single day. That got old real fast. Then I learned how to print postage and get things shipped right from my house. Life is much easier for this Ebayer now adays.

Upon receiving a paypal payment, you will notice the little box that says “print shipping label.” You need only click on the button, fill out a little bit of information and print your label. Once your label is printed, you then cut along the dotted line and secure it to the box. After that, you can schedule a pick up via USPS website, or click on the link at the bottom of the page after your label is printed. Easy as 1-2-3 huh? Not so fast.

You need the weight of the package. This requires a scale. Whether you purchase a scale specifically for your Ebay hobby is really up to you. You need only grab your bathroom scale, weigh yourself once. Then weigh yourself again holding the box you are shipping. Subtract one from the other, and bingo you have your weight. Granted you will not be as accurate with a shipping scale, but for all intents and purposes you will be within a few ounces. Always, estimate high, The last thing you want is your buyer receiving a package postage due.

You also need to select a shipping method. Again Priority Mail is an option, so is Parcel Post, and First Class. Each method has its own limitations so be sure you are familiar with the requirements of each. You may also need the dimensions of the package, so keep a tape measure by the computer just in case. By the way, if you ship Priority Mail, you can get boxes for free! All you need to do is get a user id and password at www.usps.com visit their store and select the Priority Mail boxes you will need. It takes a few days to get them delivered, but this is an excellent chance to save some money on your hobby or business. We all know how expensive boxes can be, and this is just a great chance to keep more of that money Ebay keeps trying to take away in fees.

Once the label is printed you will need to cut the actual label away from your receipt. You can purchase actual adhesive labels for this, however regular paper works just the same. Remember not to tape over any of the bar codes or the USPS scanners will not work, and the package will be lost in limbo. So take some precautions when affixing the label to the package.

Once your label is secure, schedule that pick up. Or drop the package off, and you are ready to go.
